Amazon.com Review

Recognizing each child's intellectual, emotional, and physical strengths--and teaching directly to these strengths--is key to sculpting "a mind at a time," according to Dr. Mel Levine. While this flashing yellow light will not surprise many skilled educators, limited resources often prevent them from shifting their instructional gears. But to teachers and parents whose children face daily humiliation at school, the author bellows, "Try harder!" A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Levine eloquently substantiates his claim that developmental growth deserves the same monitoring as a child's physical growth. Tales of creative, clumsy, impulsive, nerdy, intuitive, loud-mouthed, and painfully shy kids help Levine define eight specific mind systems (attention, memory, language, spatial ordering, sequential ordering, motor, higher thinking, and social thinking). Levine also incorporates scientific research to show readers how the eight neurodevelopmental systems evolve, interact, and contribute to a child's success in school. Detailed steps describe how mental processes (like problem solving) work for capable kids, and how they can be finessed to serve those who struggle. Clear, practical suggestions for fostering self-monitoring skills and building self-esteem add the most important elements to this essential--yet challenging--program for "raisin' brain." --Liane Thomas

Children have different ways of learning, argues Levine, a professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School and director of its Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning, so why do schools behave as though a one-size-fits-all education will work for everyone? Like Howard Gardner's Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (1983), Levine's book argues that our educational shortsightedness results in a loss of human potential on a grand scale, as kids who don't fit the mold are misclassified, stigmatized and then fail. If educators could assess differences more intelligently and redesign educational models to account for these differences, they would radically improve people's prospects for success in and out of school. Based on his work with children who have learning or behavioral problems, Levine has isolated eight areas of learning (the memory system, the language system, the spatial ordering system, the motor system, etc.). He provides chapters describing how each type of learning works and advises parents and teachers on how to help kids struggling in these areas. Levine emphasizes that all minds have some areas of giftedness and pleads for educators to "make a firm social and political commitment to neurodevelopmental pluralism." Such a plea may seem daunting, but Levine's compassionate, accessible text, framed around actual case studies, makes it seem do-able. This is a must-read for parents and educators who want to understand and improve the school lives of children.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

After numerous allegations of sexually abusing young boys in Boston and later North Carolina, Dr. Levine was forced to give up practicing medicine in 2009. He committed suicide in February 2011 just before being charged with sexual assault of former patients in Boston. His victims never had their day in court because Mel Levine killed himself. I recently purchased this book and had read the first chapter. While doing a google search for his foundation I found numerous articles in the New York Times discussing the history of sexual assaults allegedly committed br Levine. I will not be reading the rest of this book. It makes me sick that people are still making money off of a doctor that sexually assaulted young boys in the examination room.

We used this book in a masters-level special education course this summer. While Levine's work may be helpful to a parent who has little information about students with special needs and current educational practices, everything in this book has been said before by serious researchers in cognitive development and educational psychology. If you're an educator, you've seen it before and from much more reputable sources. Levine doesn't even give credit to the educational and psychological heavyweights that have already explored these ideas before he packaged them in this book. Levine also pushes for some things he wishes schools would do, when his recommendations are already considered "best practice" in most school systems, showing that while he may have vast clinical experience as a physician, he isn't as well-versed as he could be in current educational practice. This may well stem from the fact that parents came to him when their schools were failing them - and so he had limited experience with schools that are doing things the right way.In addition to the lack of originality and familiarity with current educational research and practice, there is the question of continuing to hold Levine up as a pediatric authority given the accusations and events that ended his medical practice and ultimately his life. While his suicide prevented the matter from ever being proven in a court of law, Levine surrendered his medical practice in more than one state following multiple accusations of misconduct with young patients in those states. The book includes more than one recommendation of matters that should be kept between young patient and doctor, where he recommends parents stay out of the conversation - creepy recommendations given what he was accused of. Given that his ideas can be found from many reputable education and medical sources, why use a source that is so tainted? Look to Gardener's work on Multiple Intelligences and you'll get everything you needed from Levine.

Highly recommend for adults seeking answers on unlocking a child’s mind or understanding and teaching a child who has difficulty learning.

This is an extraordinary book. I read it to try to understand and help my grandson. I ended up seeing that all of have parts of our brains that are not high functioning, but that we each also have parts that are! We are truly uniquely and wonderfully made. Our education system needs to reflect that! I'm thrilled that NC seems to understand that and have begun to help teachers, parents and kids! Wonderful! While Dr. Levine is no longer with us, his work stands the test of time,

An eye opening book that every education professional and student should read. Mel Levine writes about the education structure and how it works against the minds of certain kids. But if we change the way we address learning disabilities, we can change learning.

This book is wonderful for parents and professionals alike. As a child therapist I learned a great deal about learning styles- information that will help me in my work. Much of the information was new to me, and it was explained in a way that was comprehensible. A great book!

I enjoyed listening to and learning more about our wonderful brains.

It’s sad that a book written by someone who is a child molester is still being printed and used for classes. I am disgusted at myself for having to spend money and read such an awful book.
