Past two days, I was oblivious to the world, immersed as I was in this author's storytelling. I'm kinda proud of myself. I read his two books - Cast Under an Alien Sun and The Pen and the Sword - in 48 hours; nothing could distract me, I was so into it. I tend to eat up this sci-fi conceit. Olan Thorensen's Destiny's Crucible series doesn't apply time travel, but it's close enough for government work. It's within hailing distance of Flint's 1632, Stirling's Island in the Sea of Time, Leo Frankowski's Cross-Time Engineer, or, if you want to go old school, H. Beam Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and the granddaddy of them all, Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The Pen and the Sword picks up a month - or 36 days, Anyar time - past the events in Cast Under an Alien Sun. Fact is, I liked it even better than Cast Under... Timeline check: It's been four years now since an alien spacecraft accidentally collided with Flight 4382 and griveously injured chemistry graduate student Joe Colsco was spirited away by the aliens for observation and repair of his shattered body. And it's been two years now that Joe - now Jozef Kolsko - has been stranded on the planet Anyar, on the island of Caedellium, with no hope of returning to Earth. He's done well for himself. In two years he'd significantly altered the landscape of Caedelli culture. The Pen and the Sword had me all anticipate-y. I couldn't wait to catch up with Jozef and see his world expand past the confines of St. Sidryn's and Abersford. Thorensen had me riveted from jump. It's partly because of the irresistible premise, and partly because of his knack for breaking down the innovations Jozef introduces to an alien society with 17th century-level technology with clarity and simplicity so that even simpletons like me can get the science and the process. Mostly, though, I raced thru these two novels because I was so wrapped up in the characters' lives. There is a wealth of likable people in these pages, ranging from our guy, Jozef, to the brilliant scribe Maera Keelan to her parents, Culich the hetman and Breda, to the Beynoms at the abbey and Jozef's hulking best friend Carnigan, and many others besides. Even the adversaries, the Narthani, are etched out really well, written not as mustache-twirling caricatures but as people who think and reason and are disciplined and dedicated to their voracious Empire. In this second volume, the Narthani invasion has finally reached Jozef and Maera and those within their circles. There's a shift then in that the thrust of Jozef's "inventions" and ideas focuses more on contributing towards the war effort. I liked that the author emphasizes that the tactics and strategies Jozef comes up with are ones he remembers from reading and movies and video games, because, of course, Joe back on Earth had had no practical experience. I appreciate that Jozef is smart enough to start taking fighting lessons but he doesn't suddenly become this epic action hero. In fact, Jozef is motivated by a bump of self-preservation which at times counters his allegiance with the islanders. There's even a fleeting moment in which, as the invasion looms, he wonders whether he should join the other side. He shows a sensible dose of fear and hesitation before jumping into the heat of battle. I get all that. It makes me relate to him even more. Anyway, Jozef ends up doing his share and more. He remains a thinking man's hero.Me, I'd break down this book into two halves. The first half leans more towards a romantic vibe as its main plot centers around Maera's time spent in St. Sidryn's, there tasked by her chieftain father to meet and learn about the mysterious Jozef Kolkso. And sappy guy that I am, I tore thru those chapters, crammed with moments of Maera and Jozef getting acquainted. The second half - or maybe the last third - takes on a robust martial tone as it chronicles the sweeping battle between the overwhelmed Caedelli islanders and the precise armies of the Narthon Empire. Thorensen smartly details the technical aspects of the war but doesn't neglect the psychological toll it takes on all the participants. The result is that it's as if we're put right in the trenches."Olan Thorensen" is the author's pen name. I giggled at first because what if the guy's real name were, say, Olaf Oarbender or Bergljot Odinson or maybe Bob Jenkins? It doesn't matter what his name is. The guy can write. He can write well enough that readers end up losing sleep because they're compelled to keep turning pages. I can't wait for the third book which was supposed to have been out by now, except it got so long it had to be split into two volumes. So, maybe, the end of November? I've questions, so many. About the alien Watchers. About Jozef's altered physiology. About more inventions Jozef can produce and progress on Jozef's mini-industrial revolution. About that prologue which, as The Pen and the Sword concludes, has yet to happen. Good thing Jozef is a chemist. It makes sense that he can invent stuff. Me, I love Terry Pratchett. In his book, Johnny and the Bomb, one of his characters gets stranded in the 1940s and realizes he doesn't know how to make anything, and, so, instead, he ends up buying stock into upcoming innovations he knows will succeed. That's more me. If I were stuck in the past, I doubt I can invent a spoon.

This series begins with an unusual backstory that lifts it far above the run of the "fell into a video game" mill. The premise of an ordinary modern American being suddenly dropped into a human society of warring clans at a roughly 1750 level of technology could have gone horribly wrong in so many ways, but is in this case quite well thought through. Placed in such a situation, even an intelligent, history-aware person is going to know about the existence of so many technologies that he would have no idea how to build. He would know that there will be steel ships the size of towns, but how do would you build one in a society of wooden-vessel sailors, not being a naval architect?Thorensen does a good job of finessing how his protagonist would approach problems like this, given managerial skills to make use of local talent and a decent knowledge of history that lets him know what path we on Earth took to reach given technological goals.I am going to enjoy seeing how this series plays out.

This Series, is a fascinating work. While it does follow the traditional earthling stranded in a less advanced world, and due knowledge and skills quickly advances to the forefront of society cliché.The story is actually quite well developed and quite more complex than the usual fare that follows that trope, it is quite the large novel, which is something I like as it does have meat and the pacing while quite sedate, is not glacial, the story does move forward quite effectively and it does provide a satisfactory and enjoyable read. The story does present us with several mysteries, and an steady development arc which are a joy to read, my only complaint would be that there are several points of detail in the story that are somewhat hard to swallow which to me detract from the amazing work Mr. Thorensen has done. Primarily that Caedelli are both too nice to be believable and too naïve to be believable, particularly for the setting that has been established. But that is a minor caveat in a thoroughly well written book.

First let me say I really enjoy stories like this where some one is transplanted via time or space to another less advanced world. I really enjoy hearing about the inventions and ideas the characters introduce and how they handle life. The first book did ok. This book not so much. This book mostly focused on his relationships and the "war" with the narthani. It could be my military background or historical studies, but I have just not been impressed with the descriptions of tactics in this book. Also the same for his relationships. Relationships can add some good flavor to a book but for a book of this genre, it shouldn't be the focus as it was in this book.I'd like to see the character return to his inventions and ideas again. Stay out of war when the character (and author) don't know much about it and keep the relationships as flavor, not the main course. If you had no issues with this, then this book is easily a 4 or 5 star story.

Well, if you want to read a decent romance then this is your book. If you want a great adventure novel then skip this one. While I like the plot in this series this book was more of the courtship of the main character with the plot taking second chair. When I can skip pages and still not miss anything you know you are in trouble. So far in this series the author could have cut several hundred pages and you would not have missed anything. If you want a good man out of time series try Rally cry by William Forchesten
