This is one of the most powerful memoirs I have ever read. It comes from a man of profound faith, a faith that was tested under the most extreme human circumstances. And there is an illustration of forgiveness that will bring tears to your eyes. It comes as the prisoners are being trained out of the camp towards home. Don't miss it. And don't waste a minute: read this book!

I had the hard copy of this book for years; it is an excellent book, but I have a personal connection for me because my Uncle Nobby(his nickname)was in the same camps and his picture is actually in this book...I have heard his stories in person and Ernest Gordon lived what he did. An excellent purchase and an excellent book. After reading this book, and knowing the way the Japanese treated our prisoners, perhaps you will join me in wishing our government had NEVER apologized for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We faced a determined, vicious and cruel enemy who would have killed their own people, or forced them to kill themselves for every foot of their land that we took. I believe the A-bombs killed less than would have died if we had had to fight hand to hand on Japan. Read what happened on some of the Japanese held islands,how many killed themselves or died rather than surrendered and read this book and some of the true historical accounts of how the Japanese treated innocent civilians in the rape of Nanking.

This is the book on which the fictional movie, Bridge on the River Kwai is based. It's the true story of the "Death Bridge over the River Kwai," named that because so many people died while it was being built. It's a miraculous story of the healing power of Christ's mercy. In spite of the brutally of the Japanese captors the POWs were able to forgive them and, consequently, many survived. I appreciate non-fiction reading and this is strongly recommended.

excellent book...whether you are a Christian or not you will love the lesson that you can learn from this time in a POW camp.......They turned it from a hell into a Heaven.

Excellent for anyone wanting to see how forgiveness works

This is a great story of humans pushed further than we can imagine today. Japanese prison camps in Southeast Asia during WWII. The Allied soldiers transitioned from "survival of the fittest" to helping and caring for each other as a result of some sacrificial behavior on the part of some prisoners. They developed their faith and many came to faith. The author (E. Gordon) eventually became a pastor and (I think) President of Princeton Theological Seminary. Well worth the read. Inspiring.

I liked this book because it was written with the honesty of a man who went through a devastating WWII Japanese prison experience. There are no apologies; there are no cultural bias to defend or criticize the thought processes; it shows survival at its most basic instinct with and without God.

This is an amazing book about prisoner of war camps and is a book you can't put down.
