About the Author

Jim Dowdalls is an art and design instructor who received his bachelor's degree in drawing and painting and a master's degree in bio-medical illustration from California State University. He has instructed classes in drawing and painting, illustration, life drawing, animal drawing, rendering, and bio-medical rendering and illustration. Jim has followed a parallel artistic track in bio-medical Illustration, and his illustrations have won numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators and the Association of Medical Illustrators. Jim has created illustrations for some of the top pharmaceutical and medical products corporations, international advertising agencies, and many of the top periodicals in this country and abroad. Jim is a fulltime faculty member at Fullerton College in Fullerton, California.

this is a great book for someone who wants to understand the fundamentals of sketching. This was a gift for an aspiring artist, and she is super duper happy with it. very good tool! She says the book is easy to understand and she is already applying some of the principles discussed in the book.

Excellent book. If you don’t learn how to draw with this book, then you didn’t try. Very well written.

What a wonderful book this is! As a self-learner and someone who is passionate about arts and crafts, I found this book to be a fantastic resource for learning and practicing the foundation skills needed for drawing.It is presented as if you were taking a traditional drawing class, starting from how to hold your pencil and the purpose of different tools for drawing, different working surfaces, light conditions when drawing, etc. It has a visual and practical approach with a lot of images to guide you through the lessons, homework and exercises so that you can practice right away. Some of the subjects covered are: proportion, perspective, composition, grid drawing, value and coloring. My favorite part of the book was the explanation about "eye level" or "horizon line". Although this is a very common term mentioned in most beginner's books, the explanation and example images helped me have a better understanding of it. Like this, I have many other examples where I found myself getting a better grasp of subjects I thought I already knew.As many artists would say "If you don't properly know your basics, no amount of rendering will be able to fix it". So, whether you are a digital or traditional artist, this book contains invaluable lessons to help you level up your art. *I read this from an eARC*

This book gives you a great primer on many different types of drawing. The book offers you many different exercises that will help you start to work on learning many of the different types of drawing presented in the book. The book is really set up like a drawing class, which is great. The author gives you a ton of great information that will help you to learn a lot about where you are and where you can be as an artist!
