The Enigma of the Owl: An Illustrated Natural History, by Mike Unwin

Review

"Excellent for armchair owling, general reference and the pleasure of looking at photographs of birds that manage uncannily to look like old friends transfigured by feathers—even with mice, frogs or snakes dangling from their beaks. Written with lively, unforced erudition by nature writer Mike Unwin, The Enigma of the Owl is a beautiful book, with 200 extraordinary images of hunting, nesting, flying and perching owls."—Jonathan Rosen, Wall Street Journal"The Enigma of the Owl, by Mike Unwin with photographs by David Tipling, explores the diversity, beauty and ecological importance of these nocturnal birds of prey."—Rachel Nuwer, New York Times"This book is sure to delight any nature lover."—Wall Street Journal, Best Books to Give the Nature Lover in Your Life 2017"Thank you, David Tipling, for the sumptuous, endearing and terrifying photographs of these uncanny creatures in The Enigma of the Owl: An Illustrated Natural History. And Mike Unwin’s authoritative descriptions of the owl way of life are fascinating."—Dominique Browning, New York Times Book Review"Visually stunning and scientifically sound, this title will appeal to owl enthusiasts as well as the casual browser."—Booklist"Mike Unwin — who keenly narrates The Enigma of the Owl: An Illustrated Natural History — brings the right measure of tempered awe, clarity and glee to the project. He lets the owl’s story speak for itself, with help from his pen and easy sensibility, all the while infusing his writing with the right measure of starchy erudition. . . . Just as there is not a muzzy word in the text, not one of the 200 photographs is unworthy of a museum home. David Tipling stands this side of perfection."—Peter Lewis, Star Tribune"With their straight-on stares and nocturnal habits, owls are among the most intriguing and inscrutable of animals. In this large-format book, more than 200 photographs of owls in the wild and essays by nature writer Unwin help to demystify the creatures. The pictures, taken or selected by Tipling, catch owls on the wing, in the nest and on the hunt, providing a close-up look at dozens of species. Among the highlights: the Eurasian eagle owl, which can weigh up to 10 pounds and take down foxes and eagles, and the great grey owl, which, by sound alone, can locate and catch prey creeping underneath a layer of snow up to 30 feet below the bird's perch in a tree."—Scientific American"Unwin and Tipling have created a visual feast on the beauty and strength of these mysterious creatures. Birding enthusiasts are sure to find it a captivating read, but the photography alone is enough to delight anyone interested in nature."—Hope Murnane Foley, Providence JournalIncluded on the 2017 Best Book List by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)"By grouping select owls geographically . . . Unwin and Tipling enable better appreciation of their unique adaptive capacities. I found I was on a worldwide tour and savoring each species group!"—Tony Angell, from the Foreword

A stunning book photo -wise. Maybe the best bird photo collection I've ever seen, and I'm old enough to have seen almost everything (I had a photography business many years ago). I wonder whether the reviewer who gave 3 stars based upon the photographs not being well printed could have gotten a bad copy, somehow. The photos in mine are fabulous. No sign of anything less than that. Unfortunately the book is so remarkable that someone stole it before I could send it to a friend who loves owls and envies us the 2 great horned owls that are nearly always present on our property. As an aside, it would be wonderful to have more text, but there is quite a bit, and this is a photography book -- hard to have photos like these and as much text as you'd like. It is already quite a heavy book. Regarding the text, I am tempted to say how my experiences of great horned owls differ in some respects from the text about them. It would be fun to tell readers that these characters have maybe 30 -- maybe more -- different sounds they can make including prolonged barking (medium to large size dog, and we know it isn't a dog only because it is overhead), and also a perfect ear-splitting, almost terrifying, reproduction of the Queen Elizabeth's horn as it backs out of its berth in the New York City harbour. Right overhead, at 4 a.m., in pitch black darkness. (I didn't know I was so close to their tree). Just astounding.

An absolutely beautiful book. Many, many extraordinary photographs in full color, showing every subspecies (I guess) covered, from fledglings to full-grown adults, and in a wide variety of actions and attitudes. The organization is very helpful, too, done by geographical areas around the world. Accompanying texts are well written and informative, without being pedantic or too technical for the layperson. I've never seen a live owl where I live, but there must be some around somewhere in the area. Until I see one, this book is irresistible, one to be read and looked at, savored, slowly. My thanks to the authors and to Yale University Press.

Beautiful images only con is 2 of the 2 page spread images the owl faces are in the binding you have to really push the pages down to see the images fully would have been better as a pullout but otherwise i definitely would recommend this book to anyone who likes owls or nature photography lots of beautiful owls some I've never seen before most are full page size images

Beautiful illustrations; illuminating text.

As a graphic artist and 30 year shutterbug I was very disappointed in the quality of the photos in this book. I have several bookshelves full and far better photo/coffee table style books than this. The content is also lacking. We have had barred owls by us for a decade, I'd hoped to learn something more about them but the content was fleeting at best, 1 page, that was it. My local wildlife experts at our botanical gardens offered more info. The book arrived damaged as well, dust jacket was torn in multiple places including down the spine bilaterally. The book cover itself underneath had gouges in it under the dust cover. This is not a quality book. I paid for my item, it was not given freely for a review. I'll be returning it.

I like owls, and the photos in this book did not disappoint me. I am still reading the texts, but as the photos are my main interest, I quickly stop reading, and browse the photos.I once met three huge owls in a forest, one parent and two young ones. The parent dived down on me to check me out, but I did not move, and the owl flew within a foot of my face, and back to the young ones. The parent was perhaps 50cm tall, huge talons, and a beak that looked big, even in that flat face. The flying was soundless, just a silent whoosh as it passed my face. I am happy I was not considered being a pray, nor a threat. The book is strongly recommended.

This book contains fabulous photos and detailed descriptions of a most captivating animal. Highly recommended and well-worth the price (approx $26)

A gift for my husband, the owl lover! This book is beautiful full of pictures and information! So much fun to pick up anytime!
