What a nice item to have access to on my Kindle. I have various hardback copies and paperback copies of Thoreau’s work stashed here in my home; some of which I have had for years and years. These copies are fine and dandy and I love each and ever one of them but the Kindle edition gives me the mobility I seem to need more and more each year.In my opinion the works of Thoreau are timeless. Like many others I was introduced to his work via his essay on Civil Disobedience and of course Walden. Now I will not lie to you and say that I enjoy all of his work equally. As a matter of face some of his writing makes my eyes roll to the back of my head. That is okay though because the works I do like more than make up for those that I don’t.This edition gives me the opportunity to read what portions I want to read and when I want to read them. Some works relax me, some inform me, but I must tell you that all of them, even those I am not overly fond of, make me think and ponder. This is a good thing. This is not the sort of book you will want to start at the first page and read straight through...take it in small doses and think while you read. Hey, it works for me.There is one thing I have observed over the years. Those individuals who were ‘forced’ to read these works via mandatory reading lists in either H.S. or early in their college career (myself included) have a dim view of Thoreau and his writing. If you fall into this category, I would suggest you give him another shot now that you are older. You may quite well be surprised at your change in attitude...on the other hand, maybe not. Just give it a try and see if it works. I know that my view has changed year after year and now that I am well into my dotage I find a new appreciation and feel I now “get it.”

Five minutes after I have downloaded the set and I am already greatly disappointed. I bought this edition because it says the COMPLETE works. But in the journals, which were my chief interest, most of the entries are either truncated in odd ways, or entirely missing. How could they do this? Thoreau's journals are the heart and bedrock of his writing. But in this edition they are eviscerated and mangled. Perhaps most of the rest of his writings are here, but if you are interested in his journals, be forewarned, only tiny samples are here!

The hardest part is following the Table of Contents. You can click a category and jump to that section (ie poetry) and it will take you to the Table of Contents for Poetry, but then you have to go all the way back to the first TOC to search for another section such as Short Stories. I suppose that's pretty much the way they all work. Otherwise, it's great.

Not everyone "gets" Thoreau. But if you do, boy is this collection just the most awesome one to have. I read this almost everyday. Wonderful!

This is by no means complete. Worse, it calls Thoreau's major works "novels." Avoid this.

As reading John Muir earlier in life I always wanted to read more about Thoreau and downloading this book has been a terrific experience.The history, the erudition and the perspicacity of this man is astonishing. A must read for all Americans!

So So interesting, train and stage coach to Cape Cod before the bridges imagine that. The deep Maine woods.Just a fantastic piece.
