I am a big fan of this book and I have all 5 editions of it.The book covers RHEL 7.1, Ubuntu 17.04, Debian 9.0 and FreeBSD 11.0.Ironically, the book has retained the "UNIX" word in the title, however all true Unix systems have been dropped (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX). Strictly speaking, there are no Unix systems described, as Linux and FreeBSD are Unix-like.This book has always been known for a broad coverage of Unix-systems and a practical approach to system administration. For example, if you wanted to perform a typical administration task, such as adding a new disk in Solaris/AIX/HP-UX/IRIX, you needed only one book instead of tons of vendor documentation.Even that HP-UX and Solaris are dying, these systems are still in use in large enterprises, and are likely to remain there for years. After dropping all systems except for Linux and FreeBSD, and shifting approach from practical administration this book is risking to turn into a just another Linux book that we have many around.However, this is still the best system administration book.A summary of changes I noticed compared to the previous editions:- Boot chapter describes systemd- Scripting chapter dropped Perl and added Ruby and GIT- Much more on sudo (for example, explains how to configure sudo without password)- Syslog chapter now includes rsyslog- Web hosting chapter added Nginx and HAProxyCompletely new chapters:- Configuration Management (Ansible and Salt)- Containers (Docker)- Continuous Integration and Delivery (DevOps, Jenkins)- Cloud Computing (AWS)DNS, E-mail, Networking and NFS chapters didn't change.No more "Serial devices and terminals" chapter.Quite strange to remove this traditional stuff from a UNIX book, keeping in mind that some server models still have only a serial port and no graphics card, so a terminal and a serial port is the only way to manage them.Backups chapter has gone away! Hey, what's going on?Tapes as transportable media and tape libraries are not going to die and will always be in use.System administration without backups? It's a nonsense!Looks like this book is not targeted at enterprise admins anymore.Please return the backup chapter, it must be in the system administration book, and there is a space for it, keeping in mind that this edition is thinner than a previous one by 100-pages.

As previous versions, this is an excellent book that is comprehensive and readable. This edition drops coverage of Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX, focusing instead on three Linux distributions (Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS) and FreeBSD.As a FreeBSD user, I was thrilled to see the system included in the coverage, however I was disappointed with several glaring omissions. In particular, there is an entire chapter on containers yet the authors failed to even mention the existence of Jails, which could reasonably also have been mentioned in the "Management Of The root Account" section of the Access Controls chapter. There is surprisingly no coverage of the pf firewall, opting instead to cover IPFilter which I'm pretty sure no one uses. I'd even take ipfw, there's a lot of interesting features there. I was also surprised to very minimal coverage of the GEOM system. I was not, however, surprised by the short section of the Virtualization chapter that basically dismisses bhyve, although I use and enjoy bhyve myself.Ultimately, this edition definitely seems less like a UNIX book and more like a pure Linux book. The inclusion of FreeBSD without proper coverage of its features may actually make the system look worse than if it hadn't been included at all, as readers ignorant of the system assume that the omission of coverage implies the lack of a feature. The exclusion of the other UNIXes, while somewhat understandable, only drives the Linux monoculture forward. Oracle may have killed Solaris, but illumos still has a lot to offer the OS space (for instance, via smartOS) and is now the primary (and open-source) SunOS system.That said, the book delivers the quality that it is known for, with up to date information and plenty of meat on the bone. If you're reading reviews on it, you probably already know you want it.

Hands down the greatest Unix and Linux series (use term to refer to various revisions/editions) ever written. Correction: The greatest technical series every written. Started using back in 2000 after seeing Purple book on coworkers desk. Pulled myself through some complex problems over next consulting jobs. Very detailed discussions, every example has seven plus layers of information beyond what it's primarily demostrating. Awesome start for beginners, incredible nugets for experts. You can read this book from start to finish or you can toss it on a close shelf and use as reference.

The content of the book is great and easy to grok, it's one of a kind that I've found so far, but it is marred by what seems to be a kindle fire issue.Much of the book holds examples that seem to be images and some of the images will be dropped long with preceding text. Reloading the book several times could fix the issue for a few pages but is never fully recovered.

As a few other people have pointed out, this book has dropped the Unix operating systems from previous editions - but in my opinion they've double downed on the more modern computing concepts for Linux operating systems, namely; Monitoring, Virtualization, Containerization, Configuration Management, Cloud Computing and Continuous Integration. Great overview of the main Linux concepts with good examples for the more popular Linux OS's.This book really is a great resource if you work with Linux computers/servers at any capacity, but a must read for any future system administrators or Linux/DevOps engineers!

Lian Zhen is a fantastic artist. He has developed an excellent art book that shows how to create art based on both the traditional style of Chinese painting and modern applications of these traditions. He not only offers a basic understanding of the styles, but excellent illustrations of how to apply them in your own art.

I just received this book recently, as my winter will be spent with watercolors.Initially the book seller sent the wrong volume, and I contacted them immediately about the error. They couldn't have been more kind and generous to make the proper switch, credit my account for the mailing return cost, and promptly corrected the error. I would definitely do business with this impecable company again, and Lian Zhen's work is a wonderful way to discover water color, and especially "the Chinese Painting Techniques" which are totally different than western traditions!

Love, love this book, full of color, design, techniques. It is very inspiring, I paint on porcelain and this book has generated many ways in which I can utilize the same technique when painting on porcelain, Wonderful book, highly recommend and is good just ot have sittng on the coffee table as well. My great grandchildren love to look through the book and the 5 year old often draws and "paints" his own pictures from the pictures found in the book. Can't say enough about this book and it really was in new condition.

His books are excellent! They are very freeing if you have felt bound by strict photorealism, it helps loosen up your approach while giving you the tools to approach your art with a new perspective and give it a new interpretation. I was specifically very interested in the tutorials on pouring and very appreciative of how he uses limited materials and doesn't make the medium so expensive you feel you shouldn't even try.

This is a fine introduction to Chinese Painting techniques. As a student of watercolor painting, I found this book a good source of techniques that I didn't learn in watercolor class. The instruction is very well done--articulate and easy to follow. His work is beautiful.

One of my student recommended Lian Quan Zhen's book to me. With similar background as the author, I am also Chinese scholar-amateur style painting artist, who came to study the western culture and taught Chinese art in the US since 1980's. Although Mr. Zhen was not the first Chinese author who tried to combine western watercolor medium and painting techniques with Chinese painting concepts, (Professor Shu-chi Chang, for example, has written on Chinese watercolor in the early 50's.PAINTING IN THE CHINESE MANNER.) Lian Quan's book has brought this Neo-Chinese watercolor painting style to a brand new level. His style is very "watercolor-ish" in the Chinese eyes, yet still could be labeled "Chinese painting" in English.Chinese painting's composition methods are very different from the Western painting. The author has well interpreted the linear perspective concept, as well as the use of focal point in Chinese painting composition.I like his colorful neo-Chinese watercolor painting style. His paintings on watercolor paper are very inspiring. But I found Shuan paper is very difficult for beginning students and even for an advanced artist.If you are a watercolorist and want to try painting on rice paper, you would find that mulberry paper, or Pi paper much easier to master than the traditional Chinese Shuan paper. I don't know why the author has not used any mulberry rice paper.( for fine Chinese mulberry paper, see Mulberry Rice Paper #1 Fine Fiber 10 Large Sheets 57"x30" , for more information on how rice paper could be used in watercolor collage, see Creative Collage Techniques ).

As a college student, I find this book highly relatable to me. Given the title, I expected a fun, goofy book that lists a bunch of random things that one should do in college and was looking to find a couple of outrageous things to do before I graduate. To a certain extent, it does deliver that, but it's also so much more.77 Things (the college ed.) is divided into seven sections with eleven suggestions each. The sections are as follow: (1) Around the pad [aka. your room / home], (2) Getting Out and About on Your Own, (3) Taking Advantage of School, (4) Being Social, (5) Body and Health, (6) Spoil Yourself, (7) For the Future. Some armchair travel books draw you in immediately. You feel as if you are accompanying the author, savoring every page. This book didn't.I almost didn't make it through the preface and first chapter of the book. It wasn't quite clear as to why the author and her husband resigned their positions for 'time and freedom.' The journeys in the book were accomplished over a time period of several years, not just in one year as the title would suggest. Perhaps the time was needed to write this book with a lot of superlatives. A random selection of one page includes a 'grandiose exit,' smeared sky, 'gold orb,' and 'miraculous places' in just one paragraph. I don't doubt that the author is a passionate traveller but I'm not sure that she is any more so than most, if not all, of her readers.We enjoy stretching out our travel pleasure by reading good books about our favorite places. For us that is England and I really enjoyed the chapters on England and Scotland including the author's interest in gardens and gardening. I wished those two chapters were much longer. And, maybe that is part of the reason I was unable to sustain an interest in the book. Since so many areas are covered, there isn't as much information as we'd like on any one of the individual journeys.For me, A Year in the World is pleasant but not compelling reading.

I enjoyed Under The Tuscan Sun more- STill recommeneded.Perhaps becauseit was set in one locale. In this true novel, Frances and husband travel across Europe to places they always wanted to visit. I enjoyed the history and the references to literary figures ( and cultural as well) as I was a teacher many years. Not quite a good beach book but a good book to read a litle of every night.

This book disappointed me because I expected to find the quality of writing in A Year in Tuscany. Instead, A Year in the World rambled along interminably. Where was the editor of this overwritten book? Too much erudite history and too many long attempts at poetic description make getting to the end a long slog. Also, I would have liked some description of husband Ed. Occasional, brief, stilted conversations between Frances and Ed revealed next to nothing about Ed's personality, background, thoughts or appearance. Finally, I can't help wondering how much Frances and Ed weigh? A great deal of the book is about food, and the many snacks and meals they enjoyed each day. A photo of the two would satisfy this reader's curiosity. I liked A Year in Tuscany, but A Year in the World is about six months too long.

Under a Tuscan Sun drew me to Frances Mayes and I have all her books, but this one, after I bought the book I needed to buy the audio to understand the pronunciation which I wish she had done (phonetically) after a foreign word to be able to pronounce it. Still great to be on their trip and experiences. Pat Smith

Love this book, I did enjoy, every place, every food, every experience through Frances's writing.

This is not your typical Frances Mayes book. There are even long stretches quoting other authors that I more or less leafed through. Still, it was wonderful to savor, through her eyes, places which I will never see. I so enjoy the rich mental images she evokes with her poetic use of the language. Sometimes I think I'm getting impatient when she goes off into details of authors and artists from the regions they visit. But I am finding it valuable; where else would I have heard of her French writer "muse" Colette? You don't expect philosophical musings in a book about travel? I didn't either, but I like the way her mind works and how it binds all the scenes together.This book may not be as dense with the qualities that make me read her work so slowly, savoring every phrase, but there is a feast here to enjoy.Every time I read one of her books I find myself thinking she could be a friend if life had so led. Then I quickly remember that probably everyone feels the same way. lol

The foodie aspect is interesting, but the way they travel is too slow for my taste, and I would like to hear about visits to the castles that she abhors, not the gardens that she loves.

Just love knowing this book is in m'home!!!! Both Hubby and I enjoy reading a chapter occasionally...Frances' descriptive writing joyfully relaxing.

Overland traders have gone by foot, used every imaginable kind of pack animal, and more recently used a variety of ox- and horse-drawn conveyances, then trains and today airplanes. Maritime traders throughout history have continued to advance sailing techniques.Along the way improvements and trade have had a vast impact on world history. Ukraine, where I live, entered the history books in Greek times. Attica was unable to feed itself, and Ukraine's grain was a valuable import. Troy, which dates back more than one millennium BC, was important because it stood at the entrance to the Sea of Marmara en route to the Black Sea and Ukraine's granaries. Ukraine and Poland were major trade routes during the first millennium A.D. The high technology of the time was Viking long boats which were very efficient in traveling up the Dnieper and Dniester rivers and then down the Vistula to the Baltic Sea. Kyiv and Lviv are situated along these routes.However, the clever Italians, Spanish and Portuguese improved ocean navigation. Portuguese caravels were more efficient at long-distance trade – they involved no overland portage - and Western Europe grew faster than Eastern largely as a result of their ability to take advantage of local specializations. Italy excelled in glassmaking, Belgium was expert at making cloth, England at growing wool for that cloth.The age of discovery ushered in by the Portuguese radically remade the world. Western ships were able to bring spices from Indonesia and gold from Peru back home. Fortunes were made on world trade, and the fortunes of nations shifted. Human institutions were modified to meet the changing conditions. Joint stock companies such as the Dutch East Indies Company, the British East India Company and the Hudson's Bay Company formed to take advantage of the opportunities. The corporate structure allowed them to spread risk, which made it possible to amass the capital needed to exploit these tremendous opportunities. Insurance came into existence, with Lloyd's of London as a clearinghouse for ensuring merchant trade.There are a large number of anecdotes that will stick in your mind. The phenomena and it describes is a foundation of Western civilization, as many other authors such as Jared Diamond have found. Sociobiologists such as Cochran and Harpending, in The 10,000 Year Explosion: How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution, contend that it has affected our very evolution. To be effective in trade requires the ability to read and write, to handle numbers, and to learn foreign languages. These skills are highly associated with intelligence – and the groups that excelled in world trade such as the Parsis of India and the Jews appear to have more intelligent over the course of history as successful traders thrived and the less capable ones fell by the wayside.This book is entertaining and well written. It should be part of any student's knowledge of world history.

“A Splendid Exchange” is a well-written, captivating, narrative history, from Sumer to the present. It focuses on exploration, trade and the origins of globalization. In narrating the history of commerce, the book progresses through the Delian League, the Silk Roads, Marco Polo, Black Death, the Boston Tea Party and GATT, among other stops along the way. At almost 400 pages, the book is just about the right length, but if anything it could have been longer. I would have enjoyed hearing more about the end of mercantilism and the origins of capitalism. The final chapter does a pretty good job of introducing the contemporary debate about globalization, but I would have liked to see more depth and analysis in this chapter, rather than just a broad introduction. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history and in trade and globalization.

"A Splendid Exchange: How Trade Shaped the World" is a thorough description of the effect of commerce, trade, and exchange on the world. It also describes many of the changes and continuities of trade throughout world history. William Bernstein contributes to many themes of history, such as culture, interactions, and politics. However, his most prominent contribution is to the economic world. Bernstein relates everything in his book to trade/commerce, and the effect is a very narrow view of history. While many major or important events are covered, they are seen only through the lens of an economic viewpoint.Despite this limited viewpoint, I would recommend this book to other students or people interested in history. It is interesting to see how much of an impact trade has on the world. For example, Bernstein describes the effects of trade on social systems, disease, political power, and technology. In addition, his purpose is fully completed. Bernstein's goal in writing this book was to explain how commerce shaped the world. He does this very effectively, especially through his writing style. He writes about an instance in which trade affected the world, and then takes it a step further to explain how that effect can still be seen today.In the end, the book becomes more than a history of economy. It is a history of the world, simply relayed through an economic stance. The comparisons in it, such as free trade to mercantilism, are interesting and detailed, and add to the credibility of the author. All of the information in the book, not just the major things, is also very detailed. For example, the author does not only describe trading, he describes its impact and its products' impact. A key example of this is the section on Opium Wars, which shows this political and economic conflict through the lens of trade. The well-researched, historically accurate book is definitely a good review of world history. Aside from its limited point of view, it is a wonderful, eye-opening description of trade and its impact, which are still things that dominate the global economy.

One can always wish for a bit more. A slightly more fluid writing style perhaps. A better analysis of Chinese approaches to protectionism and trade. A better sense of the sheer volumes being discussed. All that said, this is a masterful introduction for the non-expert on international trade. Blending history, economics, and political science together is always a formula for sleep, but Mr. Bernstein's pacing is brisk and fun. He shows how the subject is very important and not difficult. If you really want to get a solid understanding of how the world is as it is, read this book.
