Disappointingly brief. Little history; mostly bios and photos. Certainly there was a lot more history during those years than this slim document accounts for. Compare with Carter Alan's excellent "Radio Free Boston," which only covers the years 1968-2009, and one radio station, yet manages 319 pages, an extensive bibliography, and an index..
I grew up in Boston, first listening to radio, then working in Radio & TV in the Boston until the early 1970's. The period of history I remember most were well covered, mid-50's to mid 70's. If you are are a radio historian, or you grew up listening to Boston Radio you will enjoy this book.
Great summary and pictures of the Boston radio stations over the years. If you grew up around the 1950s-1960s, you'll enjoy this
good history
Four StarsRadio veteran and longtime college professor Donna L. Harper relates the 90 year history of Boston Radio from an experimental station on the early 1920s to rock n' roll powerhouse WMEX. Station on the air personalities are highlighted along with colorful Boston radio station owners. This well written book also contains historical photos of Boston's radio stars .
This is a delightful trip back to the Golden Era of Boston Radio. The book is well researched and augmented with lots of photosof old time favorites.Being a history buff, I particularly enjoyed reading how stations got their names and the identity of the pioneers of Boston Radio. The cover sets the tone with DJ favorite of the airwaves and sock hops Arnie Woo-Woo Ginsburg depicted with his sound equipment/noise makers. The author, Donna Halper deserves a lot of praise and thanks for putting together this wonderful history of Boston Radio. Well written and illustrated- don't miss this one, especially if you lived in the Boston area during this era.
Super book on Boston Radio....the early days. Loved it!
Excellent history book. Nice job Donna.

Review
"Carter's photographs provide a vision of Texas as we all want to imagine it to be: a hot-as-hell oasis where people lead picturesque yet complex lives, imbued with a sense of calm that can only be felt when an endless landscape extends in all directions. His work helps a transplant like me remember the state for the things that I miss rather than for the reasons I left." (The New Yorker 2018-12-05)"Photographer Keith Carter has spent his life revealing the magical in the mundane…the results, as readers of this book will see, are anything but ordinary." I am a Kieth Carter fan, but I can honestly say that this is truly an outstanding photography book. It is a compendium of 50 years of Carter's work. If you have other of his books you have probably seen many of these photos, but to have so many in one book and so large a format makes this book more that desirable for a collection.A little plug for Amazon here: I like the pre-order deal where you order before release date at a specific price, and if it goes lower before it is shipped you pay the new lower price, but if the price at release is higher you are only charged at the lower pre-order price. I pre-ordered this book from Amazon a month before it was released for $29.00. It is now about $41 on release and has an MSRP price in the dust jacket at $65.
It cost me $58 to buy the book but I only got $31 in return. Had I known that I would have kept the book & sold it myself! Bad show Amazon.
I’m a big fan of Keith’s photos, and this book is a great consummate volume of his work. I generally like the content, sequencing and introduction texts. Having said that, I feel a certain level of disappointment with this particular execution. The major issue that I see is in this book layout - some prints are stretched across two pages and sometimes with main subject in the gutter – for the book of this size that layout should not be used. Further, it seems that the publisher used different toning across the book without any specific context - some photos are extremely warm toned, others – cold. This is quite noticeable and disturbing, especially for the differently toned prints on the same page spread. Because of the above, this is not my favorite of Keith’s book in my small collection. I hope to see more!
This compilation of Carter’s work is brilliantly presented. Anyone who is already familiar with Carter’s work will be presently surprised by its presentation. Additionally, the essays provide an insightful view on the value of Carter’s career.
A truly amazing body of work that is filled with humanity and genius.
Love the book, love the photographer. Beautifully done and lots of new images.

When I first heard about this book coming out, I got very excited. I first saw Back to the Future in the local theater when I was 9 years old, and since then, I have been a huge fan. Over the years, I have gotten the various behind-the-scenes books, and incarnations of the movies. I now have them on Blu-ray and have about 10 various DeLorean time machine models.I received the book via UPS yesterday afternoon and started reading it right away. By the time I realized it, it was 3 AM. It's an excellent book and delves into many known and unknown facts, which I appreciate greatly. Gaines has tapped into the BTTF universe and I highly recommend this book to any true fan.
As one of many big fans of the Back to the Future: The Complete Adventures - Limited Edition , I knew I had to get this book and read all about the behind the scene situations in relation to this series of movies. Its a quick read for the most part surprisingly with it going in chronological order in the history of how things happened during the making of and filming of each of the movies of the iconic trilogy. The author went through various interviews, research sessions and data collecting to get every bit of information he could on all the subjects that are related to the trilogy. The technology, the actors, the movie studio (Universal), the Delorean, Hoverboards and all the people who were involved with its creation. (Most notably Director, Robert Zemekis and writer, Bob Gale.)And it does a good job of trying to fill in those little extras that are mentioned in commentaries and are just well known by now by fans of the now over 30 year series that started way back in 1985 as a script that no studio wanted any part of.The book is very heavily focused on the first film of the series that started it all, Back to the Future. With Part II getting less focus and Part III almost nothing at all. That is probably the biggest problem with the book itself. Also a bit of a problem is, there really isn't that much to talk about in relation to the series of films and the related that isn't already well known, especially with the sequels. The first movie is so iconic and everything that went behind the scenes in relation to it is actually quite interesting. But again any true Back to the Future fan should know most of these stories. For instance how Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly and only later did Michael J. Fox (MJF) become available to do the movie, even after filming started. And the book focuses a lot on the situation involving the replacement of said actor. As that probably is the biggest story line of the first movie, as how many movies start filming weeks in and decide they don't like the lead actor and have to replace him and do it all over again? And it really delves into everything in relation to the first movie. A lot of MJF facts without actually getting much from MJF himself which was odd. The book seemed very Lea Thompson quote filled but not much with the star himself. But at least you do get your fill of stories and knowledge when it comes to the movie that started it all. You will definitely feel like you have taken a trip from the start of the movie's creation to its conclusion. Focusing on the stars, vehicles, people behind the camera, how the movie did, the effect it had, the filming of. Everything is there and in great details. But when we get to Part II and beyond it becomes more brief and choppy. The book will focus on Back to the Future Part II in the later part of it, and the main focus, (as again any true fan of the trilogy should know) is the fact that Crispin Glover, who played George McFly from the first movie wouldn't come back due to a disagreement between he and the powers that be. (The actual reason still in dispute with both parties blaming the other over why he didn't come back even after this books tries to delve into it) As well as the bitterness of Jefferey Weissman who played the part of George in the movies as a replacement and his role being heavily reduced due to their trying to cover up the fact that its not Crispin Glover. And of course a lot on the hoverboard focus and how they did those effects using 1989 limitations (including an injury with a stuntwoman during one of the hoverboard scenes). As the book comes to an end they throw in a quick chapter on Back to the Future Part III and it doesn't really focus around much. It has mentions of Mary Steenburgen and talks about the marketing behind not just the third movie but all the movies, which was odd to be talking about suddenly instead of the third movie itself. But that's really it. I was actually quite disappointed as we learn so much about the first movie and get some interesting information in relation to the second but then the third movie is like the forgotten child that we have to be nice to and make mentions of but not really delve into it as if there was nothing important to say on it.So that's why this book is far from the most informative and must have book when in relation to the movie. You learn more about things from the bonus discs of the film itself and the commentary then you do here with a lot of the interesting facts in relation to the trilogy. The first movie he probably goes on for a bit too much talking about details that didn't matter then he gets to the other films and he doesn't give it that same in depth focus that one would like after reading all we did about the first movie as we are going through the book. But what this book will do well is teach those who are either new to the trilogy or not the die hard fans who know all about the little details that this book talks about and will be learning about for the first time as they read it. This came off great for that purpose. I again wish he focused more on the sequels, cartoon series, ride and video game then he does here. He makes mentions of all but it seemed like as the book went on he talked less and less about things in the same great detail as when he started.Still was a worthwhile read and a nice attempt to get it all into one book. But its far from the most complete or informative book that could have and should have been made here. This is heavy.(I would give it 3 1/2 out of 5 if we could do half stars here as its close but not quite there as it should have been.)
There was not enough new, never-before- known information in this book. The first 60 pages are okay. A few things are interesting, such as what the studio bosses wanted changed, what the first draft was like, and what a pain Crispen Glover was. But after that the book seems padded. There was a healthy section on a stunt that badly injured a stunt woman. I felt bad for her, but this story was so long that I skipped over much of it. The parts on 2 and 3 were not all that interesting. If you are 14 years old and have just watched the movie for the first time, maybe you'd find this book interesting. I've had 33 years to hear most of the stories that are in this book, so I regret the purchase.
As a huge BTTF fan I didnt know what to expect going in and what new stories I could possible find out. Having said that, I started the book and blew through it within a week because its an easy read but also I couldn;t wait to read what was coming next. Caseen really puts you in the era and its like you are in the room of when the action is taking place. Did I read some stories I read before? Yea but I also found out some new ones! This book isnt proclaiming it to be brand new never before heard stuff, but its a fun read that takes you back and gives you some insight to how the movies were made and its only like 10 bucks! I cant NOT recommend this. GET IT before time runs out!
This was a fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the making of the Back To The Future trilogy. The book contains little-known facts about the casting (and miscasting) of the films as well as insights into the development of the stories and what it took to bring them to life. My only quibble about the book is that it spends more time than I would have liked discussing the impact of the films on the global culture and on events that have occurred around the world over the last thirty years, probably at the expense of more details about the movies themselves. Still, I highly recommend it for fans of the films.
We Don't Need Roads is a collection of details from (what I consider) the greatest trilogy of all time. Any fan of the Back to the Future series owes it to themselves to own this book. It's an amazingly engaging read, discussing elements well known as the hiring and firing of Eric Stolz in the lead role, as well as items not well known such as a horrifying hoverboard stunt gone wrong in Back to the Future Part II. Author Caseen Gaines points out so many different behind the scenes that one wonders if more is left to be uncovered. For the time being, this novel will satisfy the thirst of any lover of Back to the Future. Buy it!

This book skims over several large concepts with only a vague mention, and without any specific technical terms to learn more. Even for an introductory book, it is vague and I am disappointed. I would have rated it a little higher had the price been closer to its value -- at $11 it is extremely excessive for what looks to be a regurgitated list of glossary terms segueing into a how-to make your own glass pipe for smoking.
Very informative read
Good view about glass blowing. Describes all the vocabulary and various techniques of glass blowing to get you familiar with working in studio. I would suggest though, if you are interested in getting into glass blowing you take some classes with an experienced glass blower. Nothing compares to hands on experience and with an instructor you will cut out a lot of mistakes by learning and listening to their experience.

Bowling seems like such a simple game. Just chuck the ball down the lane and whack the pins.Crash!! What a beautiful sound. The only problem is most of your success is a little skill but mostly dumb luck. However, you may notice a lack of consistency and realize you don't know how to get to the next step. If you get serious and want to steadily improve this book is for you. There is so much solid information for the modern bowler that for me it has become a reference book. This is where you can start and likely finish your bowling technique library.
I have learned a ton by reading this book. The folks at the bowling alley laugh because of all the yellow highlights I have in it. My game has improved and I cant believe how much I was doing wrong. The book is easy to understand and well written. Its a perfect book for anyone wanting to improve their game or just learn more about the different aspects of bowling.
Early timing and Late timing are explained and depicted on p.35 and p.36. Other books talk about it as your supposed to know what early and late timing is! Also finish should be at 1:00 o'clock (right-handed) or 11:00 o'clock (left-handed). Also a good tip, your weight should be centered over you base, with your weight slightly on your on your non starting foot. This book is well written and covers all the basics of bowling. A very good reference, I highly recommend it.
This is a useful text. Of course, the writer has to cover all types of bowlers and all knowledge levels and all parts of bowling. This leaves it a bit repetitive, simplistic and general. But I don't see how to get around that. In the end, it is a useful guide in its own right, and a useful adjunct to one-on-one lessons. Thus, well worth the buying!
I had to get the 2nd edition to get updated on reactive and newer balls and techniques as I was getting back into bowling after many years of not participating. I've had the 1st edition which is very informative and well organized, for many years. So I knew the 2nd edition would be as well written and informative as the 1st edition and bring me up to date on the newer balls and equipment. A must own for any bowler wanting to improve their game as just one bit of information can transform your game.
Pictures, diagrams, into for right and left handed bowlers... this book is an absolute must for anyone wanting to improve their bowling.
Great book on bowling! Covers everything a new bowler needs and more. One of the best for conveying knowledge and coverage of multiple topics I've read. Many well taken pictures for both right and left handed players so a plus for any lefties out there. I would consider this book a must for any bowling library.
very good book and covers things that most dont with easy to follow instructions

Its aesthetic is a graphic pulp pastiche of drawings, photo essays and kitschyou’ll discover traces of comic books, handwritten script and recipes presented in science-lab format.” The Wall Street JournalThere’s been a sudden growth in magazines for food obsessives eager for more than just recipes. Love what David Chang has brought together in Lucky Peach. I love pho and never would have thought about making it at home. Now I have some great recipes to tackle it, and have learned so much through this issue about the history and development of an iconic dish, and the differences between northern and southern approches, eh oh helps me to interpret the different phos I get at local shops. This is a great issue.
I just love Lucky Peach, plain and simple. And I love pho. This is an incredible issue - loving their writing style and illustrations.
Nothing makes me happier ... Reading Lucky Peach having No.15 at Pho 75. :)

This review is based on my experiences on a family trip to Portugal in August, 2018 compared to the descriptions in the ninth edition of this guidebook. We toured extensively in Lisbon and the Algarve, but cannot comment on the other areas.I became a fan of the Rick Steves franchise based on his previous books Mona Winks and Europe 101. I found their selective focus helpful in making the most of limited time with overwhelming choices. In this guide to Portugal, I found this very selectivity to be at times misleading. For example, there was the characterization of certain towns as having a “sleepy fishing village†vibe, with Salema and Nazaré singled out in particular. I understand that there is a time lag between research and book publication, but this is not how I would presently describe these towns, or anywhere along the Algarve from what we saw, with the arguable exception of Sagres. At least not in peak season. There is wall-to-wall development. The only area of unspoiled, natural seascapes we found were in the Aljezur region on the southwest coast, which is not mentioned at all in this guidebook. The selectivity here can even veer into snobbery, which is ironic for a guidebook series that targets middle class or budget travellers. Like most people we know who visited the area, we stayed at a hotel in the mid-region of the Algarve, in our case Praia da Rocha. Not only is this area not covered in the book, it is unhelpfully labelled on a map as “the worst of the Algarveâ€. It’s true that the beaches were well-maintained and therefore popular, and there was an abundance of restaurants and services. This is not my idea of a bad thing, and from what we saw did not differ significantly from other resort areas favoured in the text. In fact the highlight of our trip, a boat tour of coastal caves and beaches, was right in this omitted area. This made me wistful for not having consulted one of the “F word†guidebooks. At least they don’t have blackout zones! The section on Lisbon had the reliable, concise detail I was expecting, and I would recommend the snapshot volume from this series if you were to focus your visit there. Even then, I found some of the supposedly personal restaurant recommendations suspect, as the sheer volume of competition in price, food, and service seemed to level out the choices in the touristy areas. You could just randomly pick a location and not be disappointed. Another strong point was the self-guided walking tour directions, but again the particular food and store recommendations seemed arbitrary. For that, and the generally accurate and helpful cultural information, four stars.
Rick Steves is always my go to source when we go to Europe. We really follow his advice and visit a lot of his recommendations. We preordered the latest edition of his Portugal guide as it was being released a month before our trip. We were disappointed a few times. Sometimes, it was a restaurant recommendation that missed the mark but the times that were most disappointing was missing information. We had to figure out how to get between some of the cities we were visiting because it wasn't in the book. Typically, the Rick Steves book would tell you the best form of transportation, which station, and where/how to buy your tickets. That was not always the case in this guide. Even chapters that provided that weren't as specific as usual. It seemed as if Portugal perhaps has not been as familiar to the writers as other countries.
I always buy Rick Steves because he does provide some good information, but this one is lacking. He really doesn't cover a great deal of what to do and see in Portugal - he just hits the highly popular areas. His suggestions for transportation were lacking and I didn't much care for the maps. His books are sometimes oddly laid-out - I wound up tossing one into the trash in Italy because I got tired of flipping back and forth looking for things that were not in the place one would think they'd be. I doubt I'll take this book with me as most of the places I'll be going aren't in the book, but it's been an interesting, if limited, read before I embark on my trip. I may just stick with Lonely Planet from now on.
This book was extremely helpful in planning my trip to Portugal (drove across from Spain and spent time in the Algarve). As usual, Rick gives practical information any traveler can use--about driving in the country, tolls, language, etc. He's blunt about which areas to avoid and what's worth seeing. And I love his philosophy about travel--we don't go just to "see" things but to experience other countries and respectfully meet the people of the country. His book "Europe through the Back Door" truly changed my perspective...it's a must-read for anyone seeking to travel to Europe! My only complaint about Rick in general is that he is definitely aimed toward the budget traveler. I understand that part of his philosophy is that spending money puts up a barrier between you and the actual culture, and I agree. But while on a trip, it's sometimes nice to splurge on a really nice dinner or a luxury hotel, and his options are limited. To be fair, he DOES include at least one "luxury" option in categories. But sometimes his constant leaning toward budget travel can be limiting. We paired this with another Portugal book and of course Trip Advisor to make sure we got the full picture. We used Trip Advisor almost exclusively for restaurants and hotels and used this book for background and overviews. I actually prefer Fodor's and their recommendations, but I just love Rick's philosophy and his frank approach.Overall, this book is a great buy if you're planning a Portugal trip. I read bad reviews of his Spain book, so we relied solely on Fodor's for that one...but I do recommend this Portugal guide, just balance Rick's recommendations with Trip Advisor or something. Oh, and Salema (in the Algarve) is just as charming as he says...but it's definitely not as small-town as he made it sound! There were tons of people on the beach and lots of cars. Of course, I'm sure his raves about Salema ensured that it would become a tourist destination. :-) Still worth a stop though...Portugal is a beautiful country, wherever you go. Even touristy Lagos has its charms! The Algarve was fantastic...we're already talking about going back, and taking more time to explore the other regions of magical Portugal.Enjoy this book, and enjoy your trip!
Disappointing! So much missing! No cities in the alentejo region other than Evora mentioned! NO mention of Marvao, the most remarkable mountaintop fortress/ castle town! Nothing on the long Vincente coastline south of Lisbon, which is natural spectacular beauty.
